Most of us don’t realize that our hips can be the cause of lower back pain. The Deep muscles in your hips can be too tight. These are the muscles that help support your pelvis and lower back. For millions of americans, our lifestyles have become sedentary and many muscles get neglected and weak. They contract and become tight robbing us of our mobility. The older we get the more we feel the effects so we must be diligent in getting the exercise we need to live a long pain free life.
Here are a couple ways you can stretch your hip muscles and alleviate some lower back pain:
Sitting in a chair with your back straight and feet flat on the floor, bring one foot up and set it on the opposite knee. Keeping your back straight, move your whole upper body towards that foot. This will give you a really good stretch of your hip and surrounding muscles. Remember to go slowly and not over do it. Repeat this stretch for the other hip. I recommend holding this position for a ten count and doing both hips three times each session doing both hips as a set.
Another way of doing this stretch is laying down with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Bring one foot up and place it on the opposite knee. Reach through your legs and grab your shin of the leg on the floor. Gently pull your upper body towards your foot. Repeat for both hips using the same exercise program as above.
I have been doing these stretches for just a couple days and can feel the difference already. My range of motion is increasing and I am able to stretch further and hold it longer. Your body has many systems just like a car and they all need routine maintenance. If you let your car sit for a few years how well do you think it will run when you go to start it?
There is no fountain of youth and no secret to staying young and healthy. Give your body everything it needs to stay that way and it will. Water, nutrition, exercise, and sleep are the keys to a long healthy life. Lower back pain or any pain for that matter is just a way of your body telling you it needs maintenance.
