Back pain comes in many forms. One can suffer from pain due to a medical condition, after surgery, injury, or exercising after a prolonged period of inactivity. Discovering the best back pain remedies will help you ease the pain and get back to normal.

Treating Pain With Over-the-Counter Medicines

A visit to the local drug store will show many options for pain relief. There a several varieties of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and other treatments to help relieve symptoms of pain. For many, over the counter medication and a few days of rest will resolve their symptoms but for those with chronic back issues, pain symptoms due to a medical condition or recent surgery, stronger medication or treatment methods may be needed.

Prescription Back Pain Treatment

Physicians will normally prescribe mild anti-inflammatories or medications to ease pain. If this does not resolve the issue, they may increase the dosage or prescribe stronger treatment. It is important to note if you have been prescribed medication that you follow the doctors orders and take the medication only as directed. Many pain killer medicines are habit-forming and can lead to addiction with abuse.

Natural Remedies

Some people prefer natural methods of healing and this includes pain medication. Before there were colleges to educate and train physicians in medicine, herbs and plants were use to heal all medical conditions and ailments. Many are reverting back to natural healing to avoid putting extra chemicals and toxins in their body.

There are many plants and herbs known to heal. Ginger is said to contain anti-inflammatory agents which act to reduce inflammation. Red pepper actually contains the ingredient capsaicin, a pain relieved sold in tablet form in pharmacies. Fresh yarrow juice helps strengthen the muscles in the back.

Treating with Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is used to help restore the musculoskeletal system back to its normal function. Therapists often treat back problems due to health conditions, injuries, and rehabilitation after surgery.

Exercise, cold, hot, and moist heat, massage, and electrical stimulation are common treatment methods used by physical therapists to treat patients with back problems. Your physician will refer you to a therapist, who will develop a treatment plan based on your condition.

Treating with a Chiropractor

A no drug, no surgery method of treatment focuses on manipulation of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Chiropractors use their hands to make adjusts to the spine and neck area. Applying pressure to specific areas will often relieve pain to the back area.

Individuals with pain in the back that does not subside with over-the-counter medication should consult their physician. Once a diagnosis has been made, your physician will discuss a treatment plan to help resolve your symptoms. Follow your doctors orders and/or the therapists plan and you should be back to yourself in no time.

The first thing that you need to be aware about in regard to studying upper left back pain is that this form of upper back pain is often not very different than upper right back pain. In a majority of instances, back pain occurs because of stress or injury to the ligaments and also to the muscles attached to your vertebrae. If you overuse your back muscles and ligaments you leave you open to suffering from upper left back pain because such overuse can lead to inflamed and torn ligaments.

Localized Pain

The main characteristic of upper left back pain seems to be that you will feel pain in a certain area of the upper back and this pain can often turn chronic and can also be quite severe. Along with these pain patients suffering from upper left back pain may also experience muscle spasms that occur on account of use of strained or overworked muscles.

When suffering from upper left back pain it is also common for the patient to experience pain when drawing in deep breaths and the same is the case if the affected area is touched. In addition, moving of the shoulders and also the neck too can lead to upper left back pain as well as to experiencing lack of mobility in the neck region.

The most common reason why a person develops upper left back pain is strained muscles and also because of having sprained the ligaments which in turn occur because of too much pressure from doing certain activities such as perhaps exercising too severely. The end result of this pressure is that the tissues may have stretched more than they are capable of and that can lead to tears and damage that in turn causes upper left back pain.

The treatment of upper left back pain can take several different paths though consulting a physician is desirable to find out which treatment option is best for your particular condition. Use of anti-inflammatory medications is recommended to treat strained muscles and in addition you should also do stretching exercises though within limits of your endurance. In case your upper left back pain is very severe then you might even need to have surgery performed to cure the condition.

There are numerous possible upper back pain causes though a few common causes that need to be understood include poor posture, whiplash, back strain and back injuries. In the case of women, owning a pair of large breasts too has been found to be a reason why they might suffer from upper back pain.

I just came across another great exercise to relieve acute lower back pain. This exercise has very little movement which makes it ideal for people who have considerable back pain. As with all back pain exercises it is recommended to keep doing them even after the pain is gone. Your goal is to strengthen the muscles in your back so that the pain does not return! Ok so here is the exercise.

Lay on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Keeping your tailbone on the floor, over exaggerate the curve in your back, pushing your belly up towards the ceiling and hold for 10 seconds. When you come back down, pull your belly into the floor and tilt your pelvis towards your chest. Do this exercise a few times a day to give yourself more mobility and relieve your acute lower back pain.

I also found this exercise for people with chronic lower back pain. This exercise is called the bridge with leg extension. It will strengthen your lower back by forcing the muscles to stabilize your spine when you extend on leg, taking away your balance point.

Assume the same position as the exercise above. Lying on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your pelvis off the floor until your body is lined up with your knees. Lift one foot off the floor and extend that leg and hold for 10 seconds. Return your foot to the floor. Now extend the other leg. Do 3 sets of 4 reps with each leg to get rid of your chronic lower back pain and keep it away! I hope you enjoy these exercises and that they work for you. I have embedded a video that shows you exactly how to do these exercises.

What is a Herniated Disk and Can it Be Prevented?
By Marvin Stevenson

Many people have been diagnosed with a herniated disk, but most have no idea of exactly what it is. Basically, the spine is comprised of the spinal column, which is protected by the vertebrae. These vertebrae have disks between them that could be compared to a sponge. In a sense, they act as shock absorbers. When this disk get displaced, it can stick out further than it should. This particular condition is also called a slipped disk or ruptured disk and can be very painful for the individual.

Some of the symptoms of a herniated disk include severe back pain in the region of the problem disk. Should the disk actually break and rupture, the pain can be debilitating. In some individuals, if the disk presses on any nerves, a sharp pain can radiate down through the back into the legs. It can be so bad that many people do not even want to get out of bed and walk.

Anyone diagnosed with this condition may be prescribed muscle relaxants, as well as pain killers. Cold compresses will also help lessen the pain. In more severe cases, an individual may be required to undergo a surgical procedure. However, with the advanced technology of today in laser treatments, it can often be done on an out-patient basis and is much less invasive than it used to be.

The main thing to understand is that you can take steps to prevent this debilitating condition from happening to you. Keeping your weight down will help, as well as regular exercise. In fact, the stronger your back muscles are, the less likely you will be to develop this painful condition.

Should you have back pain that is holding you back from enjoying life, do not wait for it to go away. The truth is, a herniated disk can be repaired very quickly and very easily. The procedure to treat this condition is now less invasive and can be completed in just a few short days of treatment.
So you're looking for information on how to deal with your lower back pain. But there are so many places on the Internet with information about the causes, treatments, and remedies for lower back pain. So how can you tell the good stuff from the bad?

So you’re looking for information on how to deal with your lower back pain. But there are so many places on the Internet with information about the causes, treatments, and remedies for lower back pain. So how can you tell the good stuff from the bad? Well there really is no substitute for getting checked by a doctor however most people and especially men either can’t afford to or are just too stubborn!

So people get online, go to their favorite search engine and type in lower back pain. They visit a website that tells them their pain is caused by the moons gravitational pull and this device we are selling will fix the problem and the visitor actually relieves their back pain by making their wallet lighter by purchasing this device that will eliminate the moons gravity pulling on their back.

Even more dangerous is a website that appears to be run by doctors and the information sounds sincere and professional. They have several legitimate causes for lower back pain and options for treatment. So the visitor looks at the symptoms, does a self diagnosis and tries to perform one of the treatment options. Depending on the severity of the back pain and the cause, some “remedies” can actually make things worse! So what do you do?

Well if you really can’t get checked by a doctor, there are several safe things you can do to relieve your lower back pain independent of the cause. In the first 24 hours of the pain you can try ice packs or cold compresses. Thsi is the time when the area is most likely to be swollen and the cold will help bring down the swelling.

After 24 hours, heating pads or warm compresses and even a hot bath may help relax the muscles enough to relieve the pain. Massage may also be an option. Getting enough rest is also important but laying in bed for days can also make it worse. Light stretches can help get the blood flowing through the area, flushing out damaged cells and to promote healing.

Hopefully after a few days the pain goes away and a visit to the doctor will not be necessary. Even after the pain is gone you will need to keep stretching and do some back exercises to keep the pain from coming back. I have very little back pain myself but I do my back exercises everyday to keep the pain away. Having a healthy, strong back is the best way to get lower back pain relief.

Many recommend acupuncture treatment for curing back pain problems. This method involves use of ultra fine sized needles as well as even electricity that is used in order to regulate life energy flowing through the human body via certain energy meridians. When life energy in the body is well balanced, you will enjoy good health, but when this energy goes out of whack it gives rise to a number of ailments.

In order to determine whether acupuncture treatment for back pain is effective, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of how Chinese medicine works. As a matter of fact, more important than understanding how Chinese medicine works is the fact that you need to know that acupuncture is symptomatic treatment.

It is a treatment option that is good for obtaining relief from pain (including back pain). But, the key to success with using this option lies in getting a master practitioner to perform the treatment. At the same time, it is also necessary to understand that this treatment method will not alter the physical condition of your back problem or injury.

Ancient Chinese as well as experts in Asian martial arts have studied the effects of this treatment option in so far as obtaining back pain relief goes. They have found that there is such a thing as qi (life force) that exists in the human body and that this life force can be treated and brought back to its proper balance.

This means that using this ancient Chinese treatment method will help you get relief but it will not cure your condition. So, if you need to obtain relief from pain in your back then it is worth checking out this treatment option. Whats more, this is a better option that attempting to find relief through use of drug based medications that are known to cause dangerous side effects.

Millions of people across the globe suffer from back pain. It is caused by a number of things but one thing is for sure, the faster you treat the pain, the better. This post is geared towards those that are looking for back treatment but for the options that would work better for you, talk to your doctor.

The first thing you should consider is why the pain is there to begin with. Were you in an accident? Do you do too much lifting, bending and straining? Is the pain in the lower or upper back? These are all questions that your doctor will ask. Sometimes kidney or lung problems will cause back pain and they will require different treatments.

The number one back treatment is exercise. Be sure to talk to someone that is knowledgeable in the correct exercises as well as the correct way of doing them. If you do the exercises wrong, it could cause the pain to get worse.

Many times the doctor will recommend you to see a chiropractor to help align the spine in hopes that this will cure the pain. Other times, medication is prescribed to help the pain until the cause is discovered.

When you talk to your doctor about the back treatments, they will want to take x rays or an MRI to be sure nothing is broke before starting the back treatments. In order for your doctor to be able to tell what is wrong with your back, these must be done.

If the pain radiates into your hips or legs, it may be a sign that something more serious is wrong. Be sure to tell your doctor about this pain in order for the back treatment to work as it should.

For more information on back treatments, talk to your doctor. He or she is the only one that can pin point why the pain is present.

EXERCISES FOR BACK RELIEF

Many people believe that rest is best for a painful back, but actually, what your back really needs when it’s hurt is exercise. Regular exercise relieves back pain by strengthening and stretching the muscles that support the spine and helps to prevent future injury. This is a use it or lose it situation: the more you rest, the weaker your back gets, even if it is hurt. Studies have actually shown that you can heal your back pain faster and get back to your regular activities with just two days of rest. This article will focus on Yoga Exercises. Remember to contact your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

YOGA EXERCISES FOR YOUR BACK

A good, regular yoga practice will go far in relieving the stress and tension that sometimes cause mild back pain, and in fact, studies have shown that yoga is the number one most effective exercise for relieving back pain. However, not all yoga poses relieve back pain, and some can in fact aggravate existing pain, so it is important to know which poses will be most helpful in relieving back pain. It is best to do these exercises under the supervision of a certified yoga instructor, and if you encounter any problems with these poses, you should consult an expert. Even just one or two sessions with a yoga instructor can help, as an instructor will help you with your form and posture during poses. Here are some of the best yoga poses for relieving back pain. Each pose should be held from five to ten seconds, depending upon your level of comfort, and should be done on a mat or other soft, supportive surface.

CORPSE: Lie flat on your back in a relaxed position, arms resting at your sides, palms down, and legs lying naturally, with knees turned out slightly. If it hurts your back to have your knees turned outward, do this pose with knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Breathe in and out for a few seconds while allowing any tension to leave the body.

CAT STRETCH: Start out on your hands and knees with a flat back. Your hands should be directly under your shoulders with fingers spread. Knees should be directly under the hips. Head is held loosely so that you are looking at the floor between your hands. Inhale, and as you exhale, arch your back toward the ceiling, tuck your chin in to your chest so that you are looking at your navel, and tuck your tailbone underneath. Hold, then release back into your original position.

WIND-RELEASING POSE: Lie flat on your back as in Corpse pose. As you inhale, bend your knee, place your hands right below the knee, and draw your leg towards your chest. Your left leg should remain flat on the floor. Exhale and bring your forehead up to touch your knee. Inhale, and then as you exhale, return to your original position. Repeat with the other leg.

SAGE TWIST: Warning for this pose-it involves twisting your back, so you should take particular care not to twist too far or you risk aggravating any existing back pain. This should be a gentle stretch; twist just as far as is comfortable. Sit on the floor with both legs out in front of you. Bend your right knee, lift your right leg over your left, and place your right foot on the floor next to your left knee. Sitting with spine straight, place your left elbow on the right side of your right knee. Bend your left arm so that your left fingertips are touching your right hip, while at the same time, twisting to look over your right shoulder. This is where you need to be careful not to twist too far. Hold for a few seconds, release, and repeat on the opposite side.

PALM TREE: Stand with feet facing forward, arms at your sides, weight distributed evenly on both feet. Raise both arms over your head, interlock your fingers, and turn your hands so that your palms are facing upward. Next, place your palms on your head and turn your head so that you are looking slightly upward. Stretch your arms upwards, and at the same time, come up onto your toes if you can do so without pain. Stretch your entire body upward and hold, if you can. Some people have difficulty balancing during this pose, so just do the stretching part if you need to.

FISH POSE: Lie on your back with knees bent and arms at your side. Arch your back as far as you comfortably can and raise it off the ground by pushing the floor with your elbows. If you can, tilt your head backwards and rest the crown of your head on the floor. Breathe deeply from the diaphragm and hold pose for one minute if you can.

LOCUST: Lie face down with arms at the side, palms down, and elbows slightly bent with fingers pointing towards the feet. Raise your legs and thighs as high off the ground as possible without causing your back any pain. Hold for one second and repeat up to twelve times. This can be a vigorous exercise so you must take care to strain already injured muscles.

BENDING FORWARD POSTURE: Stand up straight with feet together and arms hanging loosely along your sides. Breathe in deeply and raise your arms straight above your head. While breathing out, bend forward and touch your toes if you can. If you can’t reach your toes, grab hold of your ankles or calves. To complete the pose, you should touch your head to your knees, but this may be too difficult for many who suffer from lower back pain. Your movements during this pose should be smooth, not jerky.

This is a great lower back pain exercise that addresses the abdominal muscles as the cause of your lower back pain. This abdominal stretch will improve your posture and bring you lower back pain relief.

Another great lower back pain exercise

Sitting with a poor posture like slouching for many years or doing work that requires you to be hunched over can cause your abdominal muscles to contract and actually get shorter causing lower back pain. I had this very problem and this exercise is giving me great relief but if over done can cause sharp pains in your abdomen. (I know from experience!) If done slowly and correctly the muscles will stretch and not tear.

Laying face down on the floor with your hands in the pushup position slowly raise your upper body from the waist up. About halfway up stop and take a deep breath into your abdomen. If you feel everything stretching to the point of discomfort, hold the breath for a 10 count, exhale and return to the floor. Repeat just a few times a day and you will see results quickly!

If you can go all the way up and perform the deep breath then this is probably not the cause of your back pain. For everyone that felt the stretch, continue doing these stretches until you can go all the way up and fill your abdomen with air and not feel any discomfort. One mistake I made was going all the way up and holding it for too long. This caused tears in my abdomen which results in a sharp stabbing pain for a couple days. Not to bad but definitely a nusiance.

If you do experience this pain at least you know what caused it and how long it will last. By doing this lower back pain exericse you will be taking pressure off of your lower back and improving your posture at the same time. For me, I am happy knowing that I am doing something good for my body that will help me stay pain free for years to come. Happy stretching.
